Emsteel and Yellow Door Energy sign 31MW solar project

25 March 2025

Abu Dhabi-based Emsteel has partnered with Dubai-headquartered distributed renewable energy firm, Yellow Door Energy, to develop a 31MW solar power project.

Yellow Door Energy will finance, build, own, operate and maintain solar panel installations across 40 Emsteel roofs at the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD) 1 industrial complex, to help power Emsteel's operations.

Project construction is set to commence this year, with commissioning targeted for 2026.

The project will comprise rooftop and carport solar installations, including high-efficiency solar panels, with bifacial panels used for carports to optimise clean energy generation, Emsteel said.

Upon completion, the project is expected to generate approximately 50 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually, offsetting approximately 16,000 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions a year from Emsteel’s Scope 2 emissions over the next 25 years.

The 100% self-consumed renewable electricity will directly reduce energy costs and carbon footprint, furthering Emsteel’s “commitment to operational efficiency and decarbonisation”.

Yellow Door Energy will oversee the end-to-end development while eliminating upfront investment for Emsteel.

Emsteel aims to achieve a 40% reduction in absolute greenhouse gas emissions in its steel business unit and a 30% reduction in its cement business unit by 2030, using 2019 as the baseline year, with the ultimate goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.

Emsteel operates 16 plants with an annual production capacity of 3.5 million tonnes a year (t/y) of steel and 4.6 million t/y of cement. The company exports its products to more than 70 markets, which account for 30% of its sales.

The company is also a key player in the UAE’s industrial strategy, Operation 300bn, holding a 60% share of the UAE’s steel market.
