Amea Power signs 1.5GWh battery storage agreements

26 February 2025

UAE-based renewable energy developer Amea Power has signed capacity purchase agreements with the Egyptian government to develop the country’s first standalone battery energy storage system (bees) stations.

The projects will have a combined capacity of 1,500MWh, comprising a 500MWh bess project in Zafarana and a 1,000MWh bess project in Benban.

These “milestone projects” will support Egypt’s clean energy transition by enhancing grid stability and enabling greater integration of renewable energy sources into the national energy mix, Amea Power said in a statement.

“By deploying advanced battery storage solutions, we are not only strengthening the country’s energy infrastructure but also paving the way for a more resilient and decarbonised power sector,” noted Hussain Al-Nowais, Amea Power chairman.

The projects take Amea Power’s investments across solar, wind and battery storage projects in Egypt to over $3bn, or a total capacity of 2.5GW of wind and solar projects and 2,400MWh of bess.

In December, Amea Power announced the commissioning of its 500MW Abydos solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Egypt’s Aswan Governorate.

Amea Power also signed a power-purchase agreement and land agreement for an additional 500MW wind project in the North African state.
