Siemens Energy bids for 400kV Bahrain substation

6 January 2025

Germany's Siemens Energy has submitted the lone bid for a contract to build a new 400-kilovolt (kV) substation in Bahrain's Sitra Industrial Area.

Siemens Energy offered to undertake the contract to build the substation associated with the proposed independent water and power project (IWPP) in Sitra for BD58.74m ($156.2m).

The project entails the supply of a 400kV substation, systems and civil works.

According to Bahrain's Electricity & Water Authority, the work scope includes designing, manufacturing, installing and commissioning the substation, which will require a 400kV gas insulated switchgear (GIS); a 220kV GIS; a 21kV switchgear; a control, protection and infrastructure containerised substation; telecommunications systems; and associated substation cabling.

The Sitra IWPP is a combined-cycle gas turbine plant. It is expected to have a production capacity of about 1,200MW of electricity. The project’s seawater reverse osmosis desalination facility will have a production capacity of 30 million imperial gallons a day of potable water.

MEED previously reported that the following companies had prequalified to bid for the contract to develop the Sitra IWPP:

  • Al-Jomaih Energy & Water Company (Saudi Arabia)
  • Gulf Investment Corporation (Kuwait)
  • China Machinery Engineering Corporation (China)
  • Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco, South Korea)
  • Acwa Power (Saudi Arabia)
  • Jera (Japan)
  • Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (Taqa, UAE)
  • Alghanim International General Trading & Contracting Company (Foreign Branch, Kuwait)
  • Sumitomo Corporation (Japan)

The integrated plant replaces the previously planned Al-Dur 3 IWPP. It is expected to be fully operational by the second quarter of 2029.
