Kuwait extends 400kV package bid deadline

16 December 2024

Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy (MEWRE) has extended the tender closing date for a contract to supply and install a 400-kilovolt (kV) overhead transmission line (OHTL) linking a substation in Shagaya to a substation in Subiya.

MEWRE tendered the contract in October with an initial 5 November deadline, which was subsequently moved to 24 December.

The last day for firms to submit their bids has since been extended to 14 January 2025, according to the Central Agency for Public Tenders.

The planned OHTL network will link the solar energy transformer station at Shagaya to the Subiya power station, also known as SWPS-2.

The bid bond for the contract is set at KD450,000 ($1.46m).

Subiya is home to an existing power complex in Kuwait. In January this year, MEWRE announced the completion of the upgrades of four GE Vernova 9F.03 class gas turbines at the 2GW Subiya combined-cycle power plant.

The project is expected to increase the power plant’s block output by up to 6.3% and reduce the heat rate by as much as 1.8%.

Kuwait also plans to expand its renewable energy capacity through a multi-phased solar programme in Shagaya.

MEWRE, through the Kuwait Authority for Partnership Projects (Kapp), prequalified six consortiums and companies that can bid for the contract to develop the Al-Dibdibah power and Al-Shagaya renewable energy phase three, zone one project in August this year.

Sources said the tender for the 1,100 solar independent power project could be issued by year-end.
